NEWLY appointed Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) Acting Commissioner Don Sawong has pledged to strengthen the commission’s ability to effectively tackle corruption across Papua New Guinea, saying his priority is to strategically position the agency to carry out its mandate.
Sawong made the commitment after being sworn in before the Governor-General alongside ICAC Acting Deputy Commissioners Thomas Eluh and Ellenas Batari.
Mr. Sawong acknowledged the work done by the former Acting Commissioner, Thomas Eluh, and assured the people that the work of the ICAC continues regardless of changes in leadership.
“We will continue building on the progress that has been made and further develop ICAC into a strong, credible and effective integrity institution that delivers on its responsibilities and meets the expectations of the public,” Mr. Sawong said.
Mr. Sawong stated that the former acting commissioner has provided the stability and direction that enabled the commission to continue fulfilling its mandate.
“His (Eluh’s) contribution has laid a strong foundation upon which we will continue to build,” Mr. Sawong said.
Outgoing Acting Commissioner Mr. Eluh welcomed the transition of the Commission’s leadership and congratulated Mr. Sawong as Acting Commissioner.
Mr. Eluh said that leadership transitions are a normal part of strong public institutions and help strengthen public confidence.
He congratulated Mr. Sawong and pledged his full cooperation during the transition process as he takes up the role of Acting Deputy Commissioner (Prevention and Corporate) following Mr. Sawong’s elevation.
Acting Commissioner Sawong thanked the ICAC staffs and said that their hard work is essential to the success of the organization.
“Together, we will remain focused on strengthening the Commission, upholding integrity and serving the people of Papua New Guinea,” Mr. Sawong said.
