The People’s Reform Party (PRP) has officially confirmed the resignation of Middle Fly MP Hon. Maso Hewabi, who has decided to join the Government and formally align himself with the Pangu Party.
PRP founder and Deputy Parliamentary Leader Hon. James Donald announced Hewabi’s departure in a public statement released today, saying the party had accepted his decision following consultations with PRP Parliamentary Leader and East Sepik Governor Hon. Allan Bird and endorsement by the party’s National Executive
Hewabi was a member of PRP’s three member Parliamentary Wing, serving alongside Bird and Donald.
According to the statement, Hewabi’s decision to join the Government was influenced by his desire to maintain tribal unity within his district, as well as his close familial and tribal ties with Western Governor Hon. Taboi Awi Yoto.
Donald said PRP had agreed to release Hewabi in the interest of maintaining goodwill and harmony within his tribe.
“We thank Hon. Hewabi for his dedication during his time with the PRP and wish him well in the next chapter of his political journey,” Donald said.
Despite Hewabi’s departure, Donald said the People’s Reform Party remained committed to its political agenda and would continue working towards the 2027 National General Election.
He said PRP remained determined to pursue what it described as a new political direction for Papua New Guinea.
“Niupela Rot! Niupela PNG!” the party declared in concluding its statement.
Hewabi’s move adds to the evolving political alignments ahead of the 2027 National General Election, with MPs and political parties increasingly positioning themselves as the country enters the final year of the current parliamentary term.
