NCD Governor Powes Parkop proudly announced the reopening of the Apo Street Market along Somare Circuit, Waigani Road, marking a new chapter for vendors and the wider Port Moresby community.
Governor Parkop officiated the reopening ceremony, joined by Deputy City Manager Edith Laufa, Amazing Port Moresby Director Fazilah Bazari, and Lady Emeline Tufi Dadae, wife of Papua New Guinea’s Governor General, Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae, who graced the occasion as Guest of Honour.
Governor Parkop emphasized the importance of Apo Market as a model for informal SMEs and street vending in the city, highlighting its transformation into a clean, safe, and organized hub.

“This market has earned the right to operate temporarily under NCDC approval. It has set the standard for all other street markets in Port Moresby, showing that with proper management, waste disposal, and community cooperation, informal markets can thrive and contribute positively to our city’s image,” he said.
Lady Dadae’s presence underscored the significance of the event, reflecting the support of the highest office in the land for grassroots initiatives that empower communities and strengthen local economies. She expressed gratitude to
Governor Parkop, the NCD team, and generous supporters whose contributions made the reopening possible. “As Galatians 6:9 says, ‘Let us not weary in doing good, for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.’ Today Apo Market vendors, your persistence is appreciated and acknowledged,” she stated.
Governor Parkop further outlined conditions for the market’s continued operation, including maintaining cleanliness, ensuring proper waste management, and contributing small daily fees to sustain water and waste services.
He noted that the 75 vendors have been provided with a street market kit of tents, tables, and chairs under the Apo Market Fresh Produce Association.
“This initiative benefits vendors and residents alike, while enhancing the reputation of Port Moresby,” he added.
The reopening ceremony was attended by NCDC staff, Amazing Port Moresby staff, vendors, and community members, all celebrating the recognition of the Apo Street Market under their Apo Market Fresh Produce Association as a legally sanctioned marketplace.
The event marks the beginning of a new journey for informal markets across the city, with Apo Market leading the way as an example of resilience, cooperation, and community pride.
Long regarded as the heartbeat of the neighborhood, Apo
Market will once again offer fresh produce, roasted kaukau, cassava, taro, sweet corn, peanuts, kulau, and more — welcoming families and visitors with warmth, and hospitality.
