BUK bilong Pikinini (BbP) is marking Literacy Week 2026, from 07th–11th September, by highlighting that literacy extends far beyond reading and writing, and by launching important new nutrition education resources for parents and communities.

This year’s Literacy Week focuses on the different forms of literacy that help children and families build practical knowledge for everyday life, including Nutritional Literacy, STEM Literacy and Financial Literacy. Through specialised awareness sessions and fun, play-based activities, BbP is creating enjoyable learning experiences that encourage young learners to explore, participate, ask questions and discover new ideas.

A key highlight of this year’s Literacy Week is the launch of BbP’s latest nutrition resource, the “Parent’s Guide To Child Nutrition and “Helti Mama Helti Pikinini” guide, produced with the generous support of Moore Printing.

As part of BbP’s Nutrition Education Program (NEP), the organisation delivers nutrition education sessions for young learners, as well as parent and community awareness sessions focused on the importance of good

child nutrition and its direct connection to children’s growth, development and ability to learn. Following these awareness sessions, parents are provided with a practical nutrition guide that summarizes important information in a simple and comprehensible format, ensuring the information can be easily understood and applied by families, including those in underserved and rural communities.

BbP’s “Parent’s Guide to Child Nutrition” is a 32-page resource developed to support parents with practical information on child nutrition. Building on this resource, BbP has now produced the updated 36-page “Helti Mama Helti Pikinini” guide on nutrition awareness information covering the journey from pregnancy through to a child’s first three years of life.

The latest printing support from Moore Printing is valued at more than K40,000, representing a significant investment in helping BbP make essential nutrition information accessible to parents and communities across Papua New Guinea. BbP extends its sincere appreciation to Moore Printing for its outstanding support in bringing this important resource to life and helping strengthen nutrition literacy at the family and community level.

David Doig, Managing Director for Moore Printing said “We’re very pleased that we can continue to partner with BbP to produce the Parent Guide to Child Nutrition and Helti Mama Helti Pikinini Guides. To be able to support an initiative that educates our young PNG children and their families on the importance of nutrition, is something we feel fortunate to be able to do.”

And Anne-Sophie Hermann, Founder and Vice Chair of Buk bilong Pikinini said, “Good nutrition is fundamental to a child’s development and their ability to learn. By equipping parents with practical and easy-to-understand information, we are helping families make informed decisions that can have a lasting impact on their children.”

Further strengthening the focus on nutrition during Literacy Week, the BbP team has attended the 2nd Nutrition Summit on Wednesday, 09th September 2026, hosted by the Child Nutrition Social Protection Project, Next Gen project team. BbP will be part of the Summit launch and will also host a booth throughout the event, showcasing its Nutrition Education Program, “Helti Mama Helti Pikinini” guides and other nutrition education resources.

The summit provides an important opportunity for BbP to connect with organisations, partners and stakeholders working to improve nutrition outcomes for children and families in Papua New Guinea, while highlighting the important relationship between nutrition, early childhood development and learning.

While nutrition is a key focus of this year’s Literacy Week, BbP continues to broaden its approach to literacy through engaging and age-appropriate learning experiences.

Alongside its nutrition resources, BbP is also developing and launching books across other literacy categories, including Pre-STEM and Financial Literacy, helping introduce young learners to science, technology, engineering, mathematics, money and decision-making concepts through stories and play-based learning.

Through these varied literacy activities, BbP aims to show children that learning can be fun, practical and connected to the world around them.

Beyond its Library Learning Centres, BbP also continues to support children in schools in need through book donations, helping provide greater access to quality reading materials for students who may have limited access to books and educational resources. These efforts are made possible through the generous support of BbP’s donors, corporate partners, sponsors and individuals who continue to invest in children, literacy and education in Papua New Guinea. BbP extends its heartfelt appreciation to all its supporters and donors whose contributions help make its literacy, nutrition and early childhood education programs possib
