The Mount Hagen Golf Club today teed off its major fundraising drive for a new security fence, with almost 40 teams taking part in the tournament at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club.
The fundraising tournament got underway this morning, attracting strong participation from corporate organisations, business houses and golf enthusiasts supporting efforts to improve and secure the Mount Hagen Golf Course.
Mount Hagen Golf Club President Mr Fred Koldop said today’s event is the club’s final major fundraising drive towards constructing proper security fencing around the entire golf course.
Mr Koldop said the lack of adequate fencing and security has contributed to a decline in the number of expatriates, businesspeople and other golfers using the course over the years.
“Our committee wants to put up proper fencing, improve security and lift the standard of the golf course so that we can attract golfers, expatriates, businesspeople and corporate organisations back to Mount Hagen,” he said.
Mr Koldop said Hagen Open MP and Minister for State Enterprises Hon. William Duma has pledged financial support towards the fencing project, with an official announcement expected during the presentation later this evening.
Prime Minister Hon. James Marape is also expected to attend this evening’s presentation and announce his support for the Mount Hagen Golf Club initiative. He is expected back in Port Moresby this afternoon following his maiden road journey from Port Moresby through Kerema and Lae and up the Highlands Highway, before concluding his trip in Kikori, where he is also expected to open the Hilton Hotel today.
The Mount Hagen Golf Club hopes the fencing project will restore confidence in the facility, improve security and help attract major golf tournaments and corporate events back to Mount Hagen.
