THE National Disaster Centre (NDC) has presented a K150,000 cheque towards the rehabilitation and rebuilding of Kaparoko Primary School in Central Province that was affected by Tropical Cyclone Narelle (category 5) on 20-21st March 2026.
Tropical Cyclone Narelle has destroyed four classrooms and one staff house when it struck the school.
Speaking during the presentation, NDC Assistant Director Operations & Response, Andrew Oaego said that the support shown by NDC demonstrates the government’s continued commitment to assisting communities affected by disasters.
“It reflects our belief that every child deserves access to safe education facilities regardless of the challenges brought about by natural hazards,” Mr. Oaego said.
“This contribution will support the rehabilitation of damaged classrooms and help restore learning conditions for students of Kaparoko Primary School.”
Mr. Oaego said that in line with the disaster resilience principle of “Build Back Better”, the construction of the classrooms will ensure that they are rebuilt stronger, safer and better able to withstand future hazards and disasters.
“Whilst this assistance may not address every need, we hope it will serve as a catalyst for broader recovery efforts and encourage continued collaboration among government agencies, development partners, provincial authorities, community leaders and the people of Kaparoko,” he said.
Mr. Oaego acknowledged the Provincial Disaster Committee, Provincial Administration, Department of Education, the school board and community who have advocated for assistance and support the recovery of the school.
Edication Advisor for Central Province Aeva Omuru said that the Central Provincial Disaster identified the destruction at Kaparoko Primary School and notified the NDC for support.
Mr. Omuru advised the school to use the funds properly towards infrastructures staff houses while noting that the school has already started rebuilding the damaged buildings.
The vice chairman of the school, Vela Kila represented the administration and thanked NDC for the support and assured them that they will use the money to rebuild the staff house and the classroom.
