The New Ireland Provincial Government has released K300,000 to New Hanover High School on Lovongai Island to complete the reconstruction of its boys’ dormitory damaged by Cyclone Maila in April this year.

Governor Hon. Byron Chan presented the cheque to Provincial Executive Council (PEC) Chairman for Primary Industry, Ian Kusak, in Kavieng today.

The funding is part of the Provincial Government’s K500,000 commitment towards restoring the school’s boarding facilities, with the remaining K200,000 expected to be released next week.

Mr Kusak said the funds would be deposited into the school’s operating account to facilitate the completion of the dormitory by the end of October.

“With the availability of funds, we will see to the completion of the much-needed accommodation infrastructure by the end of October, ensuring that the 2027 academic year has no disruptions due to boarding placements for male pupils,” Kusak said.

The assistance forms part of the Chan-Kolivos Government’s ongoing investment in education infrastructure throughout New Ireland Province.

Recently, the Provincial Administration also allocated K252,000 to Tanir High School on Tanga Island in Namatanai District for the construction of a new classroom complex.

Governor Chan reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving education facilities and supporting students across the province.

He said the Provincial Government had already disbursed more than K2 million through its School Fee Subsidy Programme for tertiary students, with 10 batches of payments completed and four remaining for the 2026 academic year.

“Education has always been a priority under the late Sir Julius Chan’s administration. We are carrying on that legacy for the children of greater New Ireland Province, to ensure we have an educated population as we pursue our long-term autonomy agenda,” Governor Chan said.

He stressed that continued investment in education was essential to improving learning opportunities, developing human resources and preparing young New Irelanders to contribute meaningfully to the province’s future.

The Governor said his administration would continue prioritising education as a key pillar of New Ireland’s long-term development and autonomy aspirations.
