Australia’s GG sends condolence on the passing of Sir Michael

Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae, Governor General of Papua New Guinea, today received a condolence message on the passing of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare from the Governor General of Australia David Hurley.

In expressing his sympathies on behalf of the people of Australia, the Australian Governor General described Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare as a “fearless champion for the interest of Papua New Guinea” and a ‘lasting inspiration’ not only in PNG but in the region as well.

“Sir Michael Somare was a leading statesman in the history of Papua New Guinea. His dedication to public service and national unity helped to secure the vibrant and unbroken democracy that Papua New Guinea has enjoyed since independence, bringing lasting inspiration for all of us who seek stable and prosperous region. A fearless champion for the interest of Papua New Guinea and its people, he was deeply respected by those he represented. This remarkable legacy, together with his leadership, has made him revered across the Pacific region.  

“I had the honour to meet Sir Michael Somare on a number of occasions, including during my visit to Papua New Guinea for ANZAC Day in 2017. I was struck by his indefatigable dedication to serving the interest of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a dear friend of Australia, and the bright future of our relationship owes a great debt to Sir Michael. We share a deep sense of loss at his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sir Michael’s family and the people and Government of Papua New Guinea,” said Mr Hurley.

In response, Grand Chief Sir Bob acknowledged the people and government of Australia for the invaluable support and the close friendship shared between the two countries over many years.
