THE Correctional Services (CS)
needs more funding, outgoing
Minister for Correction Service Win
Daki says.
Minister Daki spoke during a small
farewell ceremony held last
Wednesday for him as the outgoing
Minister for CS and welcoming the
incoming Minister Seki Agisa.
He said during his tenure as CS
Minister with the Department, they
were faced with stiff challenges,
especially with funding within the
Department and in the Ministerial
Division.
“This has been the major setback
that hassled progress of few projects
we initiated during my term,” he
said.
Some of these projects included the
establishment of Bomana TVET
College in conjunction with the
National Department of Education
and identifying, surveying and
securing CS Land in major jails and
rural lockups throughout the
country.
Minister Daki during his term has
visited more than 10 jail in the
country which he described as a
place where one would be sad,
heartbroken and at the same time
happy to see the smiles put on the
faces of the inmates.
Daki said the Department needed
more than what the Government has
budgeted for them.
Whilst thanking the Prime
Minister, Daki said more needs to be
done and it needed support from
everyone.
“Look into the budget for
Correctional Services, they have
lived for rice and tin fish for so
long,” he said.
“Prime Minister, you said to leave
no one behind, do not let any
Department behind.
“This is the Department that we do
not pay much attention to.”
He described CS as a place for
rehabilitation of human life, a place
that promotes safer communities and
a place that holds the future of the
country’s peace and justice.
He appealed to businesses,
companies and State Owned
Enterprises (SOEs) to assist CIS and
its services throughout the country.
Meanwhile, the incoming Minister
for Correctional Services and MP for
South Fly, Seki Agisa has vowed to
carry on from where Minister Daki
has left.
Agisa said given the short period
before the National Election, his
only priority now would be to push
forward the projects and what
former Minister has left.
