MOROBE Hammerheads the 2022 PNG Rugby Union Championship runner up are grateful for the event and appeal for management to do more awareness to grow the code in the country.

The Lae Biscuit Morobe Hammerheads were trashed by Pepsi Capital Rugby Union (CRU) Boromas 33-13 at Sir Hubert Murry last Saturday.

Hammerhead captain Kini Roy Yaki said it was a great game.

He said however the management need to do more to draw attention to the sport.

He said the three-day championship was a great opportunity for the younger players.

“I think such competition should be bigger with more awareness. Many people did not know that this championship was held. There was no awareness. I was a bit disappointed because there was no information to public to come and spectate. But maybe next time PNGRU will organise properly,” Yaki said.

He said the last time this championship was held in 2019.

He said the championship was hosted again after almost three years which is enough time for the organisers to prepare and market the sport.

Boroma captain also shared the same sentiment.

Willie Kalai said Boroma is made up of young players and he is very happy with his team’s performance and more of such tournament mut be hosted by next year onwards.

“After many years it’s the first for the championship to be hosted so we look forward to next year. For us and Morobe, we started this so we look forward to build up from next year onwards to bring PNG Rugby to next level,” Kalai said.

Moreover, the 2022 PNG Rugby Union championship was contested by East New Britain Kayas, Morobe hammerheads, NCD Dagwalas and CRU Boroma.
