PNGFA welcomes new head coach

THE newly appointed PNG Women’s national football team head coach Spencer Prior is looking at begging a total of 26 players to Australia for the Women’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers preparations.

With the first trials kicked off in Port Moresby on Monday November 28, 2022, Prior said he will be taking 23 players with additional three players for injury cover as they prepare to represent PNG.

Given under three months to go before the kick off of the intercontinental play of in February, Prior said he is focusing on going forward and the players will have to earn their spot in the squad.

“We’ve seen a lot of players but of course there another lot of players that we haven’t seen yet so the aim is toke more players for the next block in the lead up to Christmas.” By January we will probably know what our 23 will look like. We traying to first of all get everybody back to they were when they won the Oceania Championship but then also looking ahead to taking them to the next level,” Prior said.

Moreover, PNG Football Association (PNGFA) president John Kapi Natto officially welcomed the new to his new role and pledge to work with him to prepare the women team.

“For PNGFA we come through a challenge in the first leg. That’s our legacy we must always look forward and believe in the changes that come and so for. The appointment of Spencer replacing the former coach is not easy. We’ve gone through a lot of interviews and realized that he is capable,” Kapi Natto said.

Furthermore, the team has already confirmed two international trials in Sydney against Philippines and two other train and trial with local male competitors here in Port Moresby.

The trial against Philippines is scheduled to take place in December 11 and 15, 2022, while negotiations are ongoing to secure more trial and a possible international trial hosted in Port Moresby.

Coach Spencer Prior also brought a woman assistant Nichola Williams who have been working with him in his various coaching roles and will contribute to the preparation going forward.
