WORK on Gazelle District’s Commercial Kakaruk Hatchery and Broiler farm project is gaining momentum and only a few short months away from supplying Day Old Chicks and Broilers to East New Britain and the New Guinea Islands region.

In a recent District Development Authority board meeting, a policy submission for this project was deliberated on and approved for implementation. The Gazelle Business Corporation Limited (GBCL) will manage the project.

This project will be owned by the people of Gazelle and the five LLG Presidents in Gazelle have shown their full support and excitement in the project.

Incoming Executive Manager of Agriculture and Livestock with GBC, Scott Needham said the project is on schedule and under its initial K5m budget. The day-old breeder parent stock has been paid for and the first flock will arrive in May 2021 and second flock to arrive in June from New Zealand.

The first of several incubators will also arrive from Australia in mid-May. The balance of the incubators is ready for shipment and will arrive from the United Kingdom in several weeks.

When Stage 1 is completed, it is anticipated that Day Old Chicks will be available for sale in ENB and the surrounding areas by August and when Stage 2 is completed then larger quantities of DOCs and even Broilers will be available for sale prior to Christmas 2021.

When all stages are completed, the Hatchery will have the capacity of 200,000 DOC’s per week.

“We will initially be hatching out fertile eggs brought in from NZ to get an immediate start however, we will have our own Commercial Parent Breeder Farm in ENB as well. This will give us 100% PNG bred fertilized eggs to run through the new state of the art Commercial Hatchery that will be located at Kerevat.

“This is a long-term major project of significant Importance to the people of East New Britain Province and the whole of the New Guinea Islands Region. We are not receiving enough protein and one of the best and easiest proteins to grow is poultry. All of the poultry into the region is currently now either coming from Zenag and Niugini Tablebirds based in Morobe province with the balance being imported”.

“Unfortunately, there are not enough day-old chicks to go around, so it appears other Provinces may receive a good share of day-old chicks but ENB and other NGI Provinces are missing out and just not getting enough.

“The price of day-old chicks, if you can get them, and after you have to wait in long queues is ridiculous and well beyond the financial means of every day Papua New Guineans which is distressing to see. We need to change that, and the best way is to increase supply and the cost will come down, I will guarantee that to the people in the Region, Gazelle Kakaruk will make a difference.

“People in Gazelle and NGI will pay less for day old chicks and broilers and have more access to poultry and have more protein at a lower price. Children need protein, so they can grow, so their brains can grow, and they are able to do well in school, they can then progress and help to develop a more prosperous PNG in later life,” Mr Needham said.

He said there will be sensational opportunities for locals to start SME poultry businesses on a reduced initial financial outlay helping them to grow their businesses overtime to provide long term financial security for their families.

“I believe in Papua New Guinean agriculture, but the days of talking need to finish, we need to stop talking and start acting. Gazelle Kakaruk, the GBC, Gazelle District and LLG’s are acting, the standards of poultry production we will be producing will be world class, the chicks produced will be of the highest quality, high vigor and productive to the grower, anyone who buys these chicks will expect the best and receive the best”.

Member for Gazelle and Minister for Health, Jelta Wong has thrown his full support behind this initiative saying it is a great opportunity for the people in the district to engage in the poultry project.

“We in Gazelle can produce our own chicken in large commercial volumes to supply our district, our province and other provinces in the NGI,” Minister Wong said.

GBCL CEO, Jonathon Lundin says the project will generate more income to assist in implementing development strategies in the district. It will give more opportunities to the people with regards to establishing SMEs and employment.
