Zenag farm in Bulolo, Morobe province has been ransacked by villagers on Friday which will see a significant decrease in Day Old Chicks supply throughout the country.

General Manager of Zenag Chicken Stanley Leahy revealed this to PNG Bulletin describing the attack as disgraceful.

“We are deeply saddened to report wide-spread criminal behaviour at Zenag farm on Friday, March 12th. While the majority of our operations were closed to mourn Sir Michael Somare’s passing, large numbers of villagers from Zenag, Patep and Parakris seized the opportunity to loot farms and attack employees. The full extent of the damage and losses is still been assessed. Unfortunately, attacks on breeder farms will hinder DOC (Day Old Chicks) supplies to SME farmers nationwide.

“Whilst the attack on law-abiding citizens is disgraceful in and of itself, our pain is exasperated by the fact the criminal onslaught was orchestrated whilst the vast majority of citizens peacefully mourn the passing of Sir Michael Somare. Have these criminals no respect for our beloved Grand Chief?

“Perhaps most painful is the recognition that our facilities and staff were attacked by people we know in our community. Zenag farm recently donated desks, chairs and books to a range of schools in the Bulolo district. We are deeply hurt that people in some of those communities expressed their gratitude with criminal behaviour.

“We are grateful to the police for restoring order. They demonstrated bravery and professionalism in the face of anarchy. We have extensive video surveillance of the attacks and will be working closely with police to bring the criminals involved to justice,” Mr Leahy said.
