CHINESE Ambassador to Papua New Guinea H.E. Yang Xiaoguang has encouraged Papua New Guinean students awarded Chinese Government and Military Scholarships to make the most of their opportunity to study in China.

Ambassador Yang made the remarks on August 25 at a pre-departure reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy for recipients of the 2026 Chinese Government Scholarship and Military Scholarship.

The event brought together about 60 guests, including officials from the Department of Prime Minister, the Department of Higher Education and the Department of Defence, scholarship recipients, representatives of PNG students and alumni who have studied in China, and members of the media.

In his address, Ambassador Yang highlighted what he described as the remarkable achievements made by the Chinese people under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.

He also reflected on the positive outcomes of mutual support between China and PNG on core interests and major concerns, as well as the two countries’ efforts to strengthen cooperation in education and other areas.

Ambassador Yang urged the scholarship recipients to value the opportunity to study in China, work hard and build their knowledge and skills.

He said their education and experiences could help them contribute to Papua New Guinea’s development while also strengthening friendship and cooperation between PNG and China.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Higher Education, Deputy Secretary Ms. Leah Margis thanked the Chinese Government for its long-standing support for Papua New Guinea, particularly in the education sector.

Ms. Margis encouraged the students to make full use of the opportunity, respect Chinese culture and remain committed to their studies.

She also urged them to become “civil ambassadors” who could help promote greater understanding and friendship between Papua New Guinea and China.

Representatives of the scholarship recipients and alumni who have studied in China also shared their experiences and expressed their appreciation to the Chinese Government for providing educational opportunities to Papua New Guinean students.

The reception served as an opportunity to prepare the scholarship recipients for their studies while highlighting the growing educational links between Papua New Guinea and China.
