Churches urged to step up to address law and order

By MIRIAM MALAWA

IN an appeal to address the escalating law and order challenges, the Chairman of the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Law-and-Order (PPCLO) has highlighted the critical need for legislative amendments and active church involvement to address the root causes of these issues.

William Bando, who also serves as the Koroba-Lake Kopiago Member of Parliament (MP), stated the pressing nature of the problems during a recent press conference.

“The committee’s expectation is to see that the laws that need to be amended must be amended,” he said, highlighting the urgent need for legal reforms.
He urged churches to revive their role in addressing these issues.

Bando said churches, which played a significant role in the nation’s history, should re-engage with the community, especially the younger generation.
“One of the expectations is that this country was ‘opened’ by the churches, so we have to go back to the church,” he said.

“This is an area that I want to appeal to the churches for.
“We need to approach individuals; you can’t just point fingers at politicians.
“We can’t have blind eyes and deaf ears to this.

“We need to reach out to the people of this age group.”
He said the committee would look at the way funding is being remitted to the provinces for law-and-order.
Bogia MP Robert Naguri, who is a committee member urged the public to come forward and share their views and experiences.

“We don’t like law-and-order problems, give us your views your experiences. Come forward so that we will advise the parliament accordingly,” he said.
