POLICE in West New Britain have launched a selective eviction operation at Section 21 bush camp following an armed robbery at Welcome Supermarket in Kimbe—the province’s first major hold-up in more than a year.

About K13,000 was stolen in the robbery, allegedly carried out by around 10 men. Police say the suspects are residents of Section 21, while the alleged planner, originally from Bali Island and living at Section 27, is among those detained.

Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector Fred Kaiwa confirmed four suspects are in custody, while another is receiving treatment in hospital after an exchange of gunfire with police. He said the remaining suspects have been identified and a manhunt is underway.

Kimbe Town Mayor Nick Tupi backed the operation and urged residents to cooperate with authorities to address crime linked to the area.

“It is now evident that Section 21 is no longer safe with these youths. I appeal to all good citizens to work with the government to minimise crime and restore normalcy in our town,” he said.

Chief Inspector Kaiwa said the eviction exercise began two months ago but had not yet reached Section 21. Following

the robbery, a targeted eviction was initiated last night, focusing on families of those involved.

He added that the operation is part of a broader proactive policing strategy, with authorities set to resume surveys and back road clearance in previously covered areas once the exercise is completed.
