The Government has intensified its nationwide response to the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Maila, with emergency operations now in full swing across affected provinces.
The National Emergency Operations Centre in Port Moresby has been fully activated, coordinating a whole of government response alongside provincial authorities, security forces, and humanitarian partners.
Affected provinces including Milne Bay, the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, East New Britain, West New Britain, New Ireland, and Manus have been directed to immediately activate their Provincial Disaster Committees and emergency operations centres on a 24/7 basis.
Rapid assessment teams are being deployed as soon as weather conditions allow, with authorities tasked to deliver preliminary and comprehensive damage reports covering roads, bridges, public buildings, and other critical infrastructure.
A joint multi agency assessment team will be deployed to Milne Bay and Bougainville on Monday, 13 April, as the two regions continue to experience the most severe impacts.
The Government has also confirmed support from international partners, with the Papua New Guinea Defence Force working alongside the New Zealand and Australian Defence Forces to provide aerial surveillance, transport for assessment teams, and delivery of relief supplies.
The United Nations system and key bilateral partners, including Australia, have been formally notified and are on standby to assist based on verified assessment outcomes.
Minister responsible for Emergency Services Hon. Dr Billy M. Joseph, assured the nation that no community will be left behind.
“We acknowledge the hardship being faced by our people across impacted provinces. The Government stands with every affected family and is committed to protecting lives, restoring essential services, and supporting recovery efforts across the country,” he said.
He also commended provincial administrations, district authorities, and local-level governments for their tireless efforts in delivering initial relief and maintaining essential services despite challenging conditions.
Authorities have urged all communities to remain calm, follow official guidance, and rely only on verified information channels as relief operations continue.
