MINISTER for Justice and Attorney General Pila Niningi has announced the appointment of Helen Roalakona as Papua New Guinea’s Public Prosecutor for a six-year term, making her the first woman to hold the position permanently.
Ms Roalakona, who has served as Acting Public Prosecutor since May 2025, made history as the first woman to lead the Office of the Public Prosecutor. Her appointment was confirmed by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission following a competitive selection process.
Speaking at a press conference at WNB Haus, Mr Niningi congratulated Ms Roalakona on her appointment and commended her dedication and service to the legal profession.
“The Judicial and Legal Services Commission assessed all applicants for the position, and Ms Roalakona emerged as the top candidate,” Mr Niningi said.
“This is the first time a woman has taken on this role, and I congratulate her on her service to the legal profession as a prosecutor.”
Mr Niningi also announced the appointment of two judges to 10-year terms, along with several new magistrates who will undergo a 12-month probationary period before their appointments are confirmed.
He congratulated the newly appointed judicial officers and encouraged the magistrates to serve with integrity and commitment in districts and provinces across the country, where access to justice remains a priority.
