After storming into premiership contention in their debut season, Kandes Rugby League Club will take another major step when they make their first-ever appearance at Santos National Football Stadium against ladder leaders PRK Mendi Muruks in Saturday’s Amazing Round main match.

The Kandes’ rise has been remarkable. Starting third after Round 1, they slipped to eighth in Round 2 before steadily climbing: seventh in Round 3, sixth in Round 4, fourth in Round 5, third in Round 6, and briefly topping the ladder in Round 7. They now sit second behind the Muruks after Round 8, firmly establishing themselves as one of the competition’s teams to beat.

The Muruks, meanwhile, have built their campaign on consistency. From seventh in Round 1, they climbed steadily to fourth, fifth, and third across the early rounds before claiming top spot in Round 6. Despite a brief drop to third in Round 7, they reclaimed first place in Round 8, underlining their credentials as genuine premiership contenders.

Kandes head coach Stanley Tepend said the club was relishing the chance to test themselves at the national stadium. “It’s exciting for the club to be making its first appearance at Santos National Football Stadium. The players have worked hard to earn their place near the top of the ladder, and we are looking forward to the challenge against a quality Muruks side. It should be a great contest,” he said.

Captain Charlie Simon and rising star Ames John have been central to Kandes’ success. Simon’s composure, game management, and reliable goal-kicking have steered the side, while John’s athleticism, endurance, and try-scoring ability have made him a standout in the back row.

Muruks coach Roderick Puname welcomed the challenge. “We’ve got a lot of respect for what the Kandes have achieved in their debut year.

They’ve shown they can compete with the best. We are pleased with our progress, but every round is a new challenge. The players are looking forward to testing themselves against another top side,” he said.

For the Muruks, forward Limbi Henry has been destructive, leading their try tally with six in five matches, while skipper Mark Tony — “Captain Courageous” — continues to inspire with his defensive grit, organization, and sharp goal-kicking.

With first place on the line, four of the competition’s standout performers on show, and the Kandes making their long-awaited Port Moresby debut, Saturday’s Amazing Round main match promises to be one of the most anticipated contests of the 2026 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup season.
