Police have arrested and charged a 34‑year‑old man for allegedly posting threatening messages on social media targeting OK Tedi Mining Limited.

North Fly Acting Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Inspector Anjap Minata, confirmed the arrest, stating the suspect was charged under Section 23(4) of the Cyber Crime Act 2016. The charges follow a formal complaint lodged by OK Tedi Mining Ltd after the suspect allegedly used his mobile phone to post calls for communities to block the Kiunga–Tabubil highway and shut down Pump Station KM59.

Police allege the threats were posted on the Fly River Forum Facebook page, where the content quickly went viral. The company’s Community Relations Manager reported feeling offended and concerned, prompting immediate police action. The suspect was identified, apprehended, and detained at Kiunga Police Station.

PPC Minata cautioned the public to be responsible when using social media: “Do not abuse your rights. If you have issues, there are proper avenues to resolve them amicably. We must protect our mine, our future, and our pride.”

He further warned that anyone attempting to disrupt mining operations will face arrest and prosecution, stressing that the mine belongs to the people of Papua New Guinea and must be safeguarded.
