Marape-Lelang Face-Off 

THE date is now set for the Prime Minister James Marape and the Leader of the Opposition Joseph Lelang to face each other in public on the issues now facing the country.

Student Representative Council (SRC) members from the University of Papua New Guinea confirmed the scheduled date is Wednesday 5th of April, 2023, and the venue will be at the UPNG new lecture theater.

The Sunday Bulletin confirmed with the student leaders that the event will be live streamed for the citizens to watch.

The program will include all SRC presidents from various universities of the country to participate and involve in the discussions by raising their views on respective issues affecting the country.

Among the many issues facing the country, the current economic situation forcing high inflation rate, the engagement of International Monetary Fund (IMF), foreign consultants occupying key government agencies in the country will be the main topic of discussions.

The participating institutions are; PNG University of Technology, Institute of Business Studies University, Divine Word University, Western Pacific University, University of Goroka and the UPNG playing as the host university.

In a letter, UPNG SRC President Luther Kissing stated that the students have decided to embrace a more patriotic and professional approach intending to the defying issues that are affecting the country.

Mr Kissing said the intended approach will be in a form of dialogue for students and the government as they see this is the way forward to help mitigate tensions and to provide suggestions and recommendations that can contribute in resolving and clearing some of the issues that the country is facing.

He said students are a new generation and the future of this nation, and it was fitting that they are educated on pressing matters in the country and how best they, as students can contribute to nation building in the foreseeable future. 

“UPNG will take a more professional approach by bringing our leaders together in discussions, with over 6000 students represented in each faculty,” said Mr Kissing.
