The Opposition has raised serious concerns over what they described as the Government’s lack of focus on critical national priorities, warning that several pressing issues affecting citizens daily remain physically unaddressed.
Opposition Leader James Nomane made the remarks during a press conference today, emphasizing the urgent need for the Government to intensify preparations for the 2027 National General Elections as national security crisis remains at large during elections.
Nomane revealed that the 2026 Budgetary Appropriation has not been fully disbursed to Opposition Members of Parliament, a situation he says is hindering development efforts across electorates and provinces.
“These funds are meant for the people, who are legitimate citizens of Papua New Guinea, and delays in their release are affecting service delivery,” Nomane stated.
While acknowledging Prime Minister James Marape for establishing a Special Parliamentary Committee (SPC) on National General Elections, chaired by Allan Bird, Nomane expressed concern that many of the committee’s recommendations have not been implemented.
He noted that although the SPC delivered its report in record time, the Government has failed in the execution phase, raising doubts about the country’s preparedness and undermining public confidence.
Nomane stressed that early preparation is critical to ensuring credible elections and urged the Government to immediately release funding to the Electoral Commission.
He disclosed that only K50 million has so far been allocated following the SPC’s recommendations, leaving an outstanding K354 million yet to be released.
Supporting these concerns, Middle Fly MP Maso Hewabi highlighted logistical challenges faced in remote regions, particularly in Western Province.
Hewabi revealed that his electorate relied on the 2017 Electoral Roll during the 2022 National General Elections, a situation he warned must not be repeated.
“Government must not only look at Port Moresby and assume readiness. We must prepare for the worst-case scenarios, especially in vast and underdeveloped regions,” he said.
He emphasized that Western Province’s large landmass and limited infrastructure present significant challenges to election rollout, reinforcing the need for early and comprehensive planning.
Nomane concluded by urging Finance Minister Thomas Opa to ensure timely release of funds to Opposition MPs.
He also called on the Prime Minister to prioritize the permanent appointment of an Electoral Commissioner, describing it as a crucial first step in strengthening preparations ahead of the 2027 polls.
