PNG expected to sign security agreement with UK

BY MIRIAM MALAWA

PAPUA New Guinea is set to sign a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with the United Kingdom (UK) during the upcoming visit of the UK Foreign Minister, Hon James Cleverly.

This was announced by Foreign Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, during a press conference held in Port Moresby on Tuesday.

Minister Tkatchenko stated that Hon Cleverly’s visit to PNG on April 19th marks the first time that a senior cabinet member from the UK will visit the country.

During the visit, discussions will be held on various issues, including a courtesy call to Prime Minister Hon James Marape.

The UK Foreign Minister will also be visiting Hanuabada village and Port Moresby General Hospital, which have benefited from UK-funded programs. Additionally, he will pay his respects to over 400 UK soldiers at the Bomana War Cemetery.

Minister Tkatchenko confirmed that the new SOFA agreement between the UK and PNG will also be discussed during Hon Cleverly’s visit.

He noted that this agreement is similar to the one signed recently between the State and France.

SOFA agreements are often included as part of a comprehensive security arrangement between countries.

Minister Tkatchenko emphasized the historical significance of this agreement, which reflects the long-standing ties between the UK and PNG.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the UK Foreign Minister or Secretary of State on the 19th,” said Minister Tkatchenko.
