THE 8th PNG Games is scheduled to be played in Port Moresby from January 10th-20th 2024 despite funding issue, says PNG Games council chairman Albert Veratau.
He said a total of eighteen (18) provinces have already been accredited through the online accreditation system and the game is set to go ahead as scheduled.
Mr. Veratau said only four more provinces (Madang, Enga, East Sepik and East New Britain) are yet to be accredited.
He reiterated that even though they are yet to receive government funding to run the Games, the event is set to go as planned.
Meanwhile, Veratau said the games council are working on seeking funding from cooperate partners and are getting positive feedback to get the games out of the way.
“We have asked treasury to try and support us with the PNG Games but we are not going to wait for them.
“We are using whatever resources that we have to ensure that the ground work is done,” he said.
“We are still talking to treasury to release some funds.
“We have also spoken to a lot of sponsors already so wherever the sponsors come in we are delighted to receive their support.”
Mr. Veratau said with only 11 sporting codes to be played in the games, hosting of the event will cost about K3 million.
The 11 sporting codes that will be contested include: Athletics, Basketball, Boxing, Boxing, Soccer, Powerlifting, Rugby league nines, Touch rugby, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Netball, and Rugby Union 7s.
The 8th PNG Games will host 4720 athletes and team officials, 300 sports and General volunteers, 350 technical officials, and 400 security personal.
