Leader of the Opposition and Member for Chuave, James Nomane, has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Government, calling for a comprehensive reshuffle within the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) hierarchy.

Mr. Nomane raised serious concerns over ongoing issues that have unfolded in recent weeks, which he says are contributing to instability within the PNGDF and, in turn, negatively impacting the nation.

He emphasized that the PNGDF is an independent institution mandated to protect and defend the sovereignty of the country’s democracy.

“This situation reflects a clear failure in leadership. If it continues unchecked, we risk facing a full-blown crisis as we approach the national elections. The country is already experiencing socio-economic pressures, and this will only worsen,” Nomane stated.

He further claimed that the unrest at Murray Barracks indicates a growing lack of confidence in key leadership figures, including the Chief of Defence Force, the Defence Secretary, and Defence Minister Billy Joseph.

Nomane called on Prime Minister James Marape to take immediate and decisive action. He urged the Prime Minister to remove Minister Joseph completely, sideline Defence Secretary John Akipe, and CDF Polewara.

He added that there are more capable individuals within the current leadership pool who are better suited to manage the Defence portfolio and restore stability.

Nomane stressed that the ultimatum is made in the best interest of the State and its people, particularly as the nation approaches the 2027 National General Elections.

“Prime Minister, we appeal to you on behalf of the people of Papua New Guinea to act decisively. As the Commander-in-Chief and Chief Executive of this country, take this call seriously and restore trust in the Cabinet you lead,” he said.
