Police corruption in the National Capital District and Central Command that has tainted a bad image for the Royal PNG Constabulary has dropped significantly, NCD/Central Police Commander Assistant Commander Tony Wagambie jnr says.
“Police corruption notably, allegations of police brutality, bribery and extortion, which were rampant in the past, have significantly receded. A few of them are still happening, but I can assure you that efforts are being made to address them”.
Mr Wagambie said during the launching of NCD/Central Policing Plan 2023 that “every effort is being made to promote and sustain the values of good corporate governance within the Command, with the ultimate objective of improving the performance of police services in NCD and Central Province. We will be working on re-strategizing our response units so they can continue to support our police stations”.
“The Sector Patrol approach is the best way to do it. In conformity with the Commissioner’s intent, the current zone policing concept will be rebranded as part of this revised strategy. We will initiate the changes by retraining and rebranding Fox units with the first lot of 25 men going in for Use of Force training. The new concept as per Commissioner’s intent is aimed at instilling more discipline and further enhancing the Constabulary’s operability in NCD Metro Command”.
Mr Wagambie has urged NCD residence to continue to work with the police in enforcing law and order. “I assure you all that policing services in NCD and Central will gradually change, but it will take time”.
