NATIONAL St John Ambulance PNG today celebrated 69 years of service, joining St John organisations worldwide in commemorating St John Day on June 24.

Observed annually on June 24, St John Day provides an opportunity to recognise the dedication of St John personnel, volunteers and supporters who work tirelessly to improve health outcomes across the country. This year’s celebration was held under the theme: “Rest, Build, Lead and Innovate Free Hospital Care in the Region.”

Delivering the keynote address, Chief Executive Officer and Commissioner of St John Ambulance PNG, Kai Tane, reflected on the organisation’s growth since its establishment in Papua New Guinea in 1957. He highlighted its evolution into a leading provider of emergency medical services, first aid training and community health programs.

Commissioner Tane acknowledged the valuable contributions of staff, volunteers and partners, and announced a formal relationship agreement with St John International aimed at strengthening global connections and expanding professional development opportunities.

“Today, as we celebrate International St John Day 2026, St John organisations around the world come together to recognise the enduring spirit of service that has defined our organisation for centuries,” Commissioner Tane said.

“It is a day to reflect on who we are, what we stand for, and the difference we make in the lives of those we serve here in Papua New Guinea.”

Commissioner Tane emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards and upholding the organisation’s core values of service, integrity, compassion and respect. He praised the professionalism demonstrated by St John teams responding to emergencies and delivering life-saving skills training across the country.

“The work we do is not always easy. We are often called upon during moments of crisis, tragedy, uncertainty and distress, yet every day our teams show up and demonstrate professionalism, resilience and compassion,” he said.

The new agreement with St John International formally recognises the National St John Ambulance Council of Papua New Guinea and creates opportunities for learning, training and exchange programs with St John organisations worldwide.

Commissioner Tane also thanked partners, supporters and communities for their continued trust and support.

“As we look ahead to our 70th anniversary next year, we have an opportunity to build on the legacy entrusted to us. We must continue to strive for excellence, embrace innovation, strengthen our culture, and ensure that National St John Ambulance remains a trusted and respected organisation for generations to come,” he said.
