A primary school in Central province has forced students to provide tables and chairs due to shortage of these learning infrastructures currently faced by the school.

Sogeri primary school in the Hiri Koiari district is facing a serious dilemma with the shortage of important learning infrastructures that cannot cater for additional intake, mainly transfer-in students this year.

In an interview, it was revealed that letters were given out to concerned authorities, including business houses and stake holders to help the school in this regard and are still waiting for their responds.

The school authorities said the arrangement is temporary untill the school receives favourable responds from organisations they’ve written letters to.

Head teacher Chris Manggin says the affected students are mainly transfer-in students that enrolled late this year.

“We had a big number of transfer-in enrollments late this year and the school urged them to provide chairs and tables for themselves, untill and when we receive positive responds from organisations that we sent letters for assistance of funds and chairs and tables,” he said.

He added that the desks and tables in use are over seven years and few have broken and have been thrown away.

It is understood that the school has received assistance from the Koiari Local Level Government Special Purpose Authority with donation of 60 desks and a water tank in 2024.

In the meantime, the head teacher has urged teachers to post on social media about the school’s dilemma to attract business houses, organisations and individuals to support the school.
