TWO electorates in Papua New Guinea are ready to use the National Identification (NID) card system for biometric elections by 2027, according to Internal Security Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jr.
He said Yangoru-Sausia in East Sepik Province and Unggai-Bena in Eastern Highlands Province have completed their NID registrations and are undergoing data cleansing to align the NID data with the national electoral roll.
“I commend and congratulate the Yangoru-Sausia MP Hon Richard Maru and the Unggai-Bena MP Hon Kinoka Hotune Feo for working in partnership with the NID project,” he added.
Tsiamalili also outlined plans to ensure that 95% of the country’s population has an NID card by 2025.
“This is an ambitious target, but I am confident we can deliver,” he said.
The Internal Security Minister said NID project is a key government priority as it will support the delivery of government services and enable businesses to authenticate customer identity.
He added that the NID card will be an important tool for the 2027 National Election, and called on leaders to ensure that work to deliver the NID project continues at pace.
