THE United States Embassy in Port Moresby is pleased to welcome two American Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETAs), Jasmine Villavicencio and Kyle Aloof, who will begin their fellowships at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech) in Lae.
As Fulbright ETAs, Jasmine and Kyle will support English language instruction while fostering mutual understanding between the United States and Papua New Guinea through cultural exchange. Working alongside local faculty, they will help strengthen students’ English communication skills, support classroom learning, and engage in extracurricular activities that promote cross-cultural dialogue.
Jasmine, a recent graduate of the University of Tampa in Florida, earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies with minors in history, Spanish, and applied linguistics. She holds a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certificate and has experience teaching diverse adult learners. Her approach to teaching emphasizes cultural exchange and creativity, shaped by her multicultural background and experiences in Latin America and the Indo-Pacific.
Kyle, a former Peace Corps Volunteer in Tonga, brings extensive experience in education, youth development, and community engagement across the Pacific, Africa, and Latin America. He holds a Master of International Affairs from Texas A&M University and a Bachelor of Arts in Editing, Writing, and Media from Florida State University. Kyle is passionate about cross-cultural exchange and has led community-driven initiatives, including building libraries and supporting local development projects.
The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program is a flagship initiative of the U.S. government, funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education. The program places recent U.S. graduates in classrooms around the world to assist in teaching English while serving as cultural ambassadors for the United States. ETAs also learn from their host communities, creating lasting people-to-people connections and strengthening mutual understanding.
Through the Fulbright Program, participants contribute to shared goals of expanding educational opportunity, building global networks, and supporting the development of future leaders. In Papua New Guinea, the program plays an important role in enhancing English language capacity while deepening ties between American and Papua New Guinean institutions.
The arrival of Jasmine and Kyle reflects the United States’ continued commitment to education, youth empowerment, and people-to-people engagement in PNG.
The US and PNG share a strong partnership grounded in more than 50 years of cooperation, mutual respect, and shared democratic values.
Programs like Fulbright help build the next generation of leaders and strengthen the enduring relationship between the American and Papua New Guinean people.
