THE U.S. Embassy Port Moresby gathered approximately 30 alumni of U.S. exchange and scholarship programs on Thursday June 11, for a high-level policy dialogue at the American Space, National Library as part of Freedom 250-a global initiative marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The dialogue is part of an ongoing Embassy initiative to keep alumni of Fulbright, IVLP (International Visitor Leadership Program), and SUSI (Study of the U.S. Institutes) programs current on U.S. foreign policy, enabling them to serve as informed advocates within their professional and community networks.

U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Alex Berenberg delivered keynote remarks on the three pillars of U.S. foreign policy under President Trump’s second term — strengthening alliances, securing economic prosperity, and maintaining peace through strength — and their application to the U.S.-PNG relationship.

“The United States and Papua New Guinea are building something together, based on mutual respect and shared interests,” Mr. Berenberg said.

“As alumni of U.S. exchange programs, you are vital bridges between our nations. Your firsthand experience in America uniquely positions you to understand and communicate U.S. foreign policy goals within your communities.”

The United States was among the first nations to recognize Papua New Guinea’s independence in 1975, and the event drew that thread directly into the present-day partnership.

At the center of that relationship is the Framework for Strategic Cooperation, signed in September 2025 during the first-ever visit by a U.S. Deputy Secretary of State to Papua New Guinea. The second U.S.-Papua New Guinea Strategic Partnership Dialogue, held in Port Moresby in May 2026, reinforced the framework’s momentum, with a third dialogue already planned for Washington, D.C.

U.S. commitments to Papua New Guinea span satellite internet connectivity for remote health facilities, schools, and disaster response centers; military financing to strengthen the Papua New Guinea Defence Force; and HIV/AIDS epidemic control through the recent five-year bilateral health memorandum of understanding, signed under the President’s America First Global Health Strategy.

A new law enforcement Letter of Agreement between Papua New Guinea and the U.S. State Department — backed by the Embassy’s largest-ever U.S. law enforcement agencies comprised of FBI, DEA, HSI, FLETC, and U.S. Coast Guard personnel — targets transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and illegal fishing.

The event also featured the Founders Museum art exhibition at the American Space, a collection of works representing the foundations, struggles, and triumphs that shaped the United States.

  1. I am interested to apply to work there and do a post graduate programme. I have a bachelor’s degree already in Arts, majoring public policy and management and minor in social works. I am also interested to apply to do a under graduate program too if any available.
