United States Charge’d Affairs Alex M Berbenberg has announced plans for the United States’ 250th Independence Anniversary celebrations on July 4.
Mr Berbenberg said: “President Trump has asked us all around the world to celebrate the campaign called, ‘Freedom 250’, which shares American history and value with the rest of the world.”
“It’s fitting to celebrate it here in PNG which is a nation that shares our commitment to democracy, sovereignty and the rule of law.”
He reiterated that the US was one of only eight countries to recognize PNG’s independence in 1975.
“Our commitment reflects enduring belief, self-determination and partnerships and the principals in declaration of independence some 250 years ago where both of our countries are built on democratic foundations,” Mr Berbenberg said.
“I’m also exited to announce that PNG will be home to our Mobile Founder’s Museum which is sharing the story of our original 56 founders of our country that signed to the declaration of independence. This exhibit is expected to open first at the American corner at the national Library in Port Moresby sometimes next month.”
He added that US would be unveiling its routes in PNG through Amelia Airport Monument at the University of Technology, which was named after pioneer American aviator Amelia Earhart, who was flying around the world in 1937 when her plane disappeared after taking off from Lae on July 2.
“Freedom 250 isn’t just about celebrating the past it’s also about finding the future of American global leadership,” Mr Berbenberg said.
“In April we will also bringing in American expert on Artificial Intelligence who will speak with educators, government officials, business leaders and also host workshops on helping Papua New Guineans understand how AI can be used in their own industries as well as the available opportunities whilst sharing some of its own research.
“Freedom 250 will also showcase American values of transparency, free market and open societies in our bilateral strategic framework.
“These values are outlined on our bilateral strategic framework with PNG and the US embassy strongly supports business delegations here in the country.
“The primary pillar of our strategic framework is to increasing commercial ties between the two countries. Hence, we are continuing to work with companies that are already operating in PNG and we want to bring more of them to showcase the talent that’s here.”
“President Trump’s Vision is to use our 250th birthday to strengthen our engagement with PNG not only in economic band commercial side but also security and political ties as well,” M Berbenberg said.
