A ONE-day workshop was recently held at the Livuan/Reimber Local Level Government (LLG) in Gazelle District, aimed at familiarizing headmasters and head teachers in elementary and primary schools with new plans for their schools.
The LLG now has its own inspector, Mr. John Tio, who was formerly responsible for learning standards and inspections at the Education Department.
With the motto “thinking standards, talking standards, and walking standards”, Mr. Tio hopes to improve schools through collaboration among teachers.
He has introduced several initiatives in the Education Department, including benchmarking in anticipation for all schools to establish teaching and learning cultures, and set minimum standards and policies for quality education.
The workshop also introduced several plans, including the School Learning Improvement Plan (SLIP), development of the Behavioral Management Plan (BMP) for schools, financial management, and integration of local culture in teaching.
LLG president Hon Sam Piniau urged teachers to work together to raise standards for quality education.
Livuan LLG Manager Orim Popon mentioned that there was an increase in law-and-order issues in the LLG, and suggest establishment of childhood schools in each ward to address the problem.
Head teacher of Vunairoto Primary School, Daniel Marcus expressed about the desire to align and reposition their leadership style to meet government expectations.
He also proposed unifying school traditions in the LLG.
Head teacher of Iatapal Primary School, Mathias ToLulu, stated that many schools in the LLG have underperformed in recent years, but are now grateful for the presence of the inspector to help boost academic performance.
He expressed optimism in moving to the next level and changing the community mindset through education.
All schools are due for inspection, and are expected to submit inspection data, supervisors’ draft reports, attend advisory visits, and provide lesson observations and the inspector’s draft report by September.
Teachers were also encouraged to have the willpower to implement necessary changes.
