CRICKET PNG is hosting the International Cricket Council (ICC) Level One Coach Tutor Training from 14 to 16 July, 2026 at the Cricket PNG Training Centre in Port Moresby, marking an important step towards strengthening the country’s coach education pathway.
The three-day program aims to develop Certified Coach Tutor Trainers in PNG, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to deliver high-quality coaching education throughout the country.
Nine participants are attending the course, including seven from the National Capital District, one from Lae and one from Alotau. ICC Master Educator Toby Doyle from New Zealand is facilitating the training alongside Cricket PNG.
Prior to attending the face-to-face course, participants completed several online learning modules, including the ICC Foundation Level Coaching, ICC Level One Coaching and ICC Level One Coach Tutor Course. They also prepared assessment presentations on topics such as facilitator enablement, creating effective adult learning environments, maximising learning opportunities, effective communication for coach tutors, and planning and preparing for a Level One coaching course.
The training focuses on developing coach tutors with strong communication skills, including verbal, non-verbal and gesture-based communication, clear and structured messaging, the effective use of relevant teaching materials, facilitation techniques that encourage audience participation, and the ability to build strong engagement and connection with learners.
Cricket PNG Facilitator – Training and Capacity Development Officer Margaret Sibona said the program represents a significant milestone for coach development in PNG.
“Our main aim is to have Certified Coach Tutor Trainers in Papua New Guinea who can confidently deliver quality coach education across the country. We want our Coach Tutors to communicate clearly, deliver structured learning, use relevant teaching materials, facilitate engaging sessions and build meaningful connections with their audiences,” Sibona said.
Reflecting on the opening day, Sibona said participants had responded positively to the course.
“Day one has been very encouraging. The participants have shown a very good response through their group work, discussions and presentations, demonstrating strong participation and enthusiasm,” she said.
She added that extensive preparation contributed to the smooth delivery of the program.
“Preparations went very well. Participant documents and assessment tasks were distributed two weeks before the training, allowing everyone to come prepared and ready to learn,” she said.
Sibona said she was excited about the opportunity to host the ICC course at Cricket PNG’s Training Centre.
“I am very much excited and looking forward to the days ahead. This is the first time during my employment that Cricket PNG has hosted an ICC high-level training program at our Training Centre, and it is a proud milestone for our organization,” she stated.
She also acknowledged the support of both the ICC and Cricket PNG.
“A big thank you to the ICC for facilitating this program. This training will bring significant change as these participants return to their respective areas and share their knowledge across Papua New Guinea,” she said.
The ICC Level One Coach Tutor Training forms part of Cricket PNG’s ongoing commitment to building coaching capacity and creating a sustainable pathway for coach education nationwide, ensuring more qualified coach tutors are available to support the continued growth of cricket across the country.
