THE Papua New Guinea National Research Institute (PNGNRI) is set to collaborate with DataCo in a joint effort to enhance cybersecurity research and awareness in the country.
Last year, PNGNRI established the National Security and International Relations Research Program to address cybersecurity issues, headed by Dr Olubenga Ige.
Recently, a meeting was held between DataCo’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) General Manager, David Mba, and Dr Immanuel Jigo, a PNG-born cybersecurity expert from the United States who also consults with DataCo.
Dr Jigo has been working in the areas of security research, such as analyzing malware and ransomware, as well as studying how malicious actors infiltrate different systems.
Dr Jigo emphasized the importance of educating people about cybersecurity threats and identifying different types of security threats.
He highlighted that human error can render the strongest cybersecurity infrastructure ineffective.
He said cybersecurity education is crucial in promoting cyber hygiene and ensuring cybersecurity protection within the country.
Dr Jigo also pointed out that there is a disconnect between what the government is doing and what private organizations are doing to enhance cybersecurity.
He underscored the need to establish essential frameworks that can manage cybersecurity-related issues in the country.
According to PNGNRI Deputy Director for Research, Professor Eugene Ezebilo, cybersecurity is crucial in attracting investors into the country, especially in promoting the ease of doing business.
Professor Ezebilo welcomed the collaboration with DataCo and urged both entities to work together to improve cybersecurity awareness in Papua New Guinea.
In addition to collaboration on cybersecurity research and awareness, Dr Jigo suggested that creating potential curriculums within the country to help young people develop their skills could be another collaborative initiative.
