THE Hula community in the Rigo district of Central Province is gearing up for the Throwdown in Vula’a, an exciting event scheduled for this Saturday.
The throwdown in Vula’a (TiV) is an annual community event held in Hula village, Rigo District, Central Province.
The founder of TiV, Kila Kilaverave, highlighted in an interview with this paper that a CrossFit-style fitness competition is the main event, featuring Open Male and Female categories for participants above 18 years of age.
Additionally, on Saturday, the community will engage in a beach cleanup in collaboration with City Pharmacy, setting up a Health station to provide free health checks for attendees.
While the event commenced in 2019, it faced disruption due to Covid-19 in 2020. However, it regained momentum the following year and has been running smoothly ever since. This year marks its fifth anniversary since inception.
Kilaverave said that the event fosters community cohesion and inclusivity, catering to a diverse range of participants.
“Kids have an event where they are rewarded for completing an obstacle course. Young people participate in a fitness competition similar to those in other parts of the world and stand to win prizes not only for winning but also for completing workouts within the timeframe,” he said.
”Participants above 50 years for males and 40 years for females can partake in the Masters events and receive recognition for their efforts. Spectators and the entire community join in to clean up the beach and understand the importance of environmental preservation. Free health checks are available for anyone in the community who desires them.”
Since introducing Kids and Masters events, participation has significantly increased, with 105 participants in these events in 2023. Additionally, approximately 70 individuals participated in the beach cleanup. Participants are awarded prizes as tokens of appreciation for their dedication to the event over the years.
“The top three winners receive CPL and Jacks shopping vouchers, while all participants have the chance to win non-perishable food items and merchandise from sponsors,” Kilaverave noted.
Preparations are proceeding as scheduled for this exciting event to take place on Saturday.
