UPNG Basketball Tournament concluded on new heights

THE basketball competition at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) reached new heights this season, with participating teams bringing skill and game-play to the tournament.

Reflecting on the season after the grand finals held on Sunday, UPNG Basketball Association president Mr Sepu Samson expressed his satisfaction with the progress made.

He said this year, there had seen several players from local competition being picked up by teams participating in the city’s basketball tournament.

“We’re thrilled to see players from our local competition being scouted by city-based teams like Saints, Chariots, and other clubs.”

Mr. Samson highlighted this achievement as a significant milestone for the local competition, giving young players exposure to larger tournaments.

“This year has been our best yet. Last year, we set the pace, and building on that this year has brought us immense satisfaction and joy,” he noted.

He added that while the tournament presented challenges, it also offered valuable opportunities for participants to learn about the game and build relationships.

“The platform provided students a chance to associate and form connections,” he added.

Despite the smooth transition into the finals, Mr. Samson explained that a lack of funds remained a setback, limiting further improvements to the tournament. However, he praised the leadership and teamwork that elevated the competition to new levels, expressing hope that future leaders would continue to build on this legacy.

He thanked the hardworking executives, including Vice President Schekainnah Peter, Secretary Elizabeth Kakaraya, and Treasurer Joycelyn Kulangil, who worked under the guidance of their patron, Mr. David Peter.

Mr. Samson also acknowledged the support of the Basketball Federation, which provided match officials for every game.

The 2024 season will conclude with an awards night on Wednesday, August 21st, at the UPNG campus, where all participating teams and supporters will come together to celebrate the season’s achievements.
