Flood devastates parts of Mendi town

By ZEBEDEE KUMPIO

PARTS of Mendi town, the capital of Southern Highlands Province, were covered by flood this afternoon after the Mangani River burst its banks following heavy rainfall.

The flooding has caused widespread damage, particularly in the Mangani area, where the main market and nearby stores are situated.

According to an eyewitness reports, the flooding began around 2pm today, September 2, 2024.

The extent of the situation saw two 6-foot containers being washed away by the strong currents, along with a 15-seater Toyota Bus.

Meanwhile, the heavy downpour and subsequent flooding are making it difficult for residents and authorities to assess the extent of the damages as the raining and flooding persist.

Mangani Market, a central hub for the Mendi Town community, is completely submerged, with many store owners are counting their losses as their businesses have been hugely affected by the flood.

The Flooding may also cause an important road that connect Mendi Town to Western Highlands, Enga and Hela to be washed away.
