Education sector remains my top priority, says Mirisim

EDUCATION sector in Telefomin district, West Sepik Province, remains one of the top priorities of the district’s MP and Minister for Works and Highways, Hon. Solan Mirisim.

Last Saturday (September 31), Minister Mirisim made an official visit to his district to officially open a new double classroom as part of his ongoing support in education sector.

The new double classroom opened was for Kikafan Primary School in Famokmin, Framin Ward council of Telefomin Local Level Government (LLG).

The Telefomin MP was supposed to be on the ground Friday (September 30) to officiate in this ceremony but due to bad weather he had to turn back from Olsobip vie chopper.

However, that didn’t stop him to travel the next day as this was one of the important projects for the school.

“Our children need conducive environment for better learning and such infrastructure will produce quality results.

“During my tenure we have invested more in the education sector,” Mirisim said.

He said the district has enough primary school teachers who are currently on the ground teaching all primary courses.

“With a program we started in 2012, we were able to produce 200 trained teachers and they are all teaching now.

“This year we have signed another MoU with UoG and 40 Telefomin students are studying Bacholar of Education and Bacholar of Education Early Childhood Learning.

“For the next five years Telefomin will have more trained teachers,” Mirisim said.

He said under the new education policy called 166, the government wants every district to have; early childhood learning (1 year), grade 1-6 primary education, and grade 7-12 secondary education

“I’m proud to say that our district is already implementing this policy and we are continuing to build infrastructure such as classrooms in all primary schools to accommodate infrastructure challenges that come with it,” Mirisim said.

He also mentioned that soon the district will build three new junior high schools as funding has already been released to contractors.

“One will be in Ibil (Yapsie LLG), the other one will be in Eliptamin, (Telefomin LLG) and the third one to be in Oksapmin LLG.

“I’m being informed that the three contractors have already mobilized their resources to start these projects.”

Minister Mirisim further mentioned that his DDA will continue to provide support to all the education programs in the district going forward.

He thanked the contractor and the people of Famokmin for delivering such high impact project and says they will continue to get support from the district to build two more double classroom and six staff houses.

Meanwhile, Mirisim presented a cheque of K20, 000 to the Famokmin Women’s SME, K30, 000 cheque to Mesianic Church and K30, 000 cheque to a SDA church.
