PM Marape Extends Congratulations to Fiji on 54 Years of Independence

PRIME Minister Hon. James Marape extends heartfelt congratulations to the government and people of Fiji in celebration of Fiji’s 54th Independence anniversary, occurring tomorrow, Thursday, 10 October 2024.

Prime Minister Marape stated, “On behalf of the government and the people of Papua New Guinea, I convey our warmest commendations to Fiji for 54 years of democracy and celebrate their Independence anniversary this Thursday, 10 October 2024.

“Fiji gained Independence in 1970, and we acknowledge the significant contributions of early Fijian leadership to our own journey toward self-determination.

“Fiji’s five-year head start on nationhood, along with nearly a century of experience under British administration, provided our Founding Father, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, with the opportunity to seek guidance from the first Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, as we moved toward Independence and beyond. Sir Michael viewed Sir Kamisese with the admiration of a younger brother, influenced by their 16-year age difference. At the time of Papua New Guinea’s Independence in 1975, Sir Michael was 39, while Ratu Mara was 55.

“Ratu Mara was a crucial source of inspiration for Sir Michael as he endeavored to carve out his own path to Independence. This reflects the enduring bond between our two nations since their inception.

“To this day, Fiji continues to nurture this relationship with Papua New Guinea, and vice versa, through our diplomatic ties, business partnerships, and the connections fostered among our people. This embodies the true spirit of Melanesian brotherhood we cherish as ‘family.’

“On this special occasion, I offer my congratulations to Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, the Government, and all the wonderful people of the Republic of Fiji.

“Papua New Guinea is committed to standing by Fiji and looks forward to continuing this fruitful partnership into the future as we strive to build a better, stronger, and more resilient Blue Pacific Continent.”
