THE Papua New Guinea Forest Authority (PNGFA) has launched three projects in the East Sepik Province on 25th February, 2025.

The projects are the declaration of East Sepik as the first Forest Carbon Trading platform; launching of the Hawain LFA (Local Forest Area) Project which will now be converted to a Forest Management Agreement (FMA) Area; and the announcement of the establishment of the first Downstream Processing facility of all forest and wood products in East Sepik Province.

Minister for Public Service Joe Sungi, who gave the keynote address in congratulating the PNGFA for the three projects, told the Hawain people to manage their resources well not only for today but for their future generations as well.

As a former West Sepik Provincial Administrator for nine years, including the Chairman of the West Sepik Provincial Forest Management Committee, Minister Sungi shared his experiences at the event.

He also told Chairmen of Incorporated Land Groups (ILG) for Hawain who will be nominated by the people at a later date as part of the conversion process, to ensure benefits are distributed to every family and clan member who is entitled to it.

Minister Sungi also told the gathering that downstream processing is the government policy that PNGFA is implementing.

He therefore urged all parties concerned, such as the landowners, provincial government, developer and the PNGFA to work together to realize the benefits.

The Minister also commended the PNGFA for choosing the East Sepik Province as the first forest carbon trading platform in memory of the late Great Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, who championed this cause in the Pacific and worldwide.

Minister Sungi also told parents that when trees are harvested, young people could be encouraged to plant cocoa or vanilla.

“When your child does not make it in formal education, don’t tell them that they failed. Or when trees are harvested, tell them that your land is here and get them to plant cocoa and vanilla for a better life.”

Managing Director for National Forest Service Mr. John Mosoro said the event is the result of three government ministers meeting at the PNGFA on 28th January, 2025.

The three Ministers include; Forests Minister Salio Waipo; Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Belden Namah, and Minister for International Trade and Investment Hon. Richard Maru.

Minister Sungi stood in for Minister Waipo, who had other commitments to let go the launching event.
