The naming competition for the new PNG NRL franchise caused a frenzy on social media following its launch yesterday.

Facebook accounts were flooded with suggestions such as Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, Hunters, Kumuls, Tumbunas, Gatherers, Wantoks, Tribesmen and many more.

Papua New Guineans are urged to go to the website https://yourteamnamehere.co/  to register their proposed names.

The competition was launched in the presence of Prime Minister James Marape, PNG NRL Bid chief executive officer (CEO) Andrew Hill, Australian High Commissioner Ewen McDonald, PNG NRL board director Lorna Mcpherson and PNG Rugby Football League CEO Stanley Hondina.

The competition is aimed at collectively involving all PNG citizens to be part of this significant and historical event.

Top five names will be picked and voted for the most preferred team name.

PM Marape was the first to register his proposed name and said the franchise name should resonate with national unity and the ongoing ties between PNG and Australia.

  1. I suggest “PNG Fuzzy Wuzzy Hunters” to be our new NRL team name.
Because Hunters has introduced at Intrust Super Cup, so let’s add the word “Fuzzy Wazzy” that will remind us of the true relationship with Australia since WW2. 🇵🇬 🇦🇺

    “PNG Fuzzy Wuzzy Hunters”!! 🏹🇵🇬🙏
