The Metoreia Urban Health Centre (MUHC) in Hanuabada has marked its first anniversary, celebrating a year of delivering critical health services to the Motu Koita people, surrounding communities, and residents across Port Moresby.
Opened in early 2025, the centre was established to improve access to quality healthcare closer to home. In its first year of operation, Metoreia has recorded significant milestones, including more than 500 safe deliveries through its maternity wing and nearly 10,000 outpatient consultations.
The facility has also treated over 300 tuberculosis and HIV patients, contributing to improved long-term health outcomes, and assisted more than 200 patients through its eye clinic, delivered in partnership with the Fred Hollows Foundation. In addition, almost 2,000 X-ray investigations have been completed to date.
Metoreia offers a wide range of services under one roof, including minor surgery, dental care, pathology, pharmacy services, and general and paediatric consultations.
For many families, the centre has been transformative, enabling mothers to give birth closer to their support networks. Health workers have also benefited from a modern, well-equipped facility that allows them to deliver care with dignity and professionalism.
As it enters its second year, the Metoreia Urban Health Centre stands as a symbol of the enduring partnership between Papua New Guinea and Australia. The PGK41 million facility was developed with Australian funding in partnership with the Motu Koita Assembly, the United Church, the National Capital District Provincial Health Authority, the National Department of Health, and the NCD Commission.
