POLICE in Enga swiftly responded to the Sorcery Accusation Related Violence (SARV) from further escalation following the death of a young man in Suyan Camp Gate in Porgera.

Enga Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Chief Superintendent, Steven Harris said the man died after consuming alcohol continuously for two days but the community in Suyan Camp Gate accused an elderly woman of practicing sorcery causing his death which led to a violence.

PPC Harris said that fortunately the police officers arrived within minutes and took immediate action to contain the situation from further escalation and ensured public safety.

Police alleged that the members of the community in Suyan camp Gate in Porgera accused an elderly woman of practicing sorcery following the death of the young man which led to a violence.

Police also alleged that during the incident, few women were named, placing their lives at immediate risk.

Police, supported by the PNG Defence Force and Mobile Squad 11 members, responded quickly and rescued a second woman from imminent harm as well. She was taken into protective custody and is safe now.

“Police have established strong leads, and the Criminal Investigation Division officers are actively identifying those responsible whilst police investigation is continuing,” PPC Harris said.

“Police reiterate that their role is to protect lives and keep people safe, particularly those who are vulnerable.”

“Sorcery accusation related violence is a horrendous act that targets the most vulnerable in our communities.”

“It is firmly rejected by elders and leaders across Enga, and police stand with them.”

PPC Harris said no allegation or belief justifies violence and such actions constitute serious criminal offending and will be dealt with through the law.

PPC urged the community to remain calm and not to take matters into their own hands.

He said if they are at risk, or aware of someone who may be targeted, contact police immediately so action could be taken to ensure safety.
