The introduction of Morobe Kandes into the 2026 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup has stunned rugby league fans across Papua New Guinea, with the debut franchise delivering consistent and exceptional results.

On Saturday, Kandes RLC recorded a 22–14 victory over PRK Mendi Muruks in the final match of Amazing Round Day One at the National Football Stadium. The win pushed them to the top of the DEM Cup ladder after Round 9.

Kandes crossed for four tries through Ames John, Jayden Nuampo, Joseph Martin, and Stenza Tandoa, while captain Charlie Simon added three conversions to steer his side home. The Muruks remained in the contest with tries from Levai Andrew, Finley Peter, and a late second effort from Andrew, but were unable to match Kandes’ consistency in attack, with Francis Sam converting just one of three attempts.
Despite a late surge from the Muruks, Kandes maintained control to claim the Round 9 victory and cap off an entertaining opening day of Digicel ExxonMobil Cup Amazing Round action

Spearheaded by former PNG Kumuls and SP PNG Hunters Coach Stanley Tepend Stanley Tepend, the Kandes have been on fire in their debut season — showcasing the quality of their players and the strength of their coaching staff and management.

After nine games, Kandes lead the competition with 14 points from six wins, two draws, and one loss. Their only defeat came in Round 2 at Ron Albert Oval in Madang, where they fell 30–16 to visiting Central Dabaris in the first-ever DEM Cup match hosted in Madang.

That loss briefly dropped them to eighth place, but they climbed steadily each week, reaching the top of the ladder in Round 7. A 14–14 draw with Goroka Lahanis in Round 8 saw them slip behind the Muruks, who edged Mt Hagen Eagles 12–4 in Lae to reclaim first place.

It didn’t take long for the Kandes to respond. In Round 9, they produced a commanding performance, shutting out the Muruks 12–0 at Santos National Football Stadium to reclaim the top spot.

The message is clear: the Kandes are not here to gamble. They are serious contenders in the 2026 season — and all eyes will be on them in the rounds ahead.
