Prime Minister James Marape has praised the National Monitoring and Coordination Authority (NMCA) and Deloitte for reviewing government expenditure, describing it as a vital step toward strengthening accountability, transparency, and value for money in Papua New Guinea.

He said the report provides Parliament, taxpayers, and development partners with a reference point to assess whether public funds are reaching their intended destinations and delivering promised outcomes.

“It is not enough for government to simply allocate money. We must know whether the money is reaching its intended destination and whether it is producing the outcomes that were promised,” Marape said.

The Prime Minister stressed that this review is the beginning of a broader monitoring and evaluation process. He called for independent verification of projects to ensure funds are used effectively, noting that stronger revenue growth must be matched by stronger expenditure outcomes.

Government revenue has grown from K5 billion in 2007 to K16.78 billion in 2025, with significant improvements in tax collections and resource sector returns. Marape said the challenge now is ensuring every kina delivers maximum benefit for citizens.

He emphasized that accountability expectations are rising and that public money must be treated with seriousness because it belongs to the people of Papua New Guinea.

Marape thanked NMCA and Deloitte for their work and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to oversight, saying the exercise will help ensure economic growth translates into better services, infrastructure, and opportunities for the people.
