More than 50 years after its founding in 1973, Marimari Lutheran Church in Port Moresby has officially begun construction on a new K3.66 million building.
The ceremony marked the start of a major project to strengthen the church’s ministry and service to the community while carrying forward a legacy of faith that has endured for generations.
The event represents an important milestone following the recent deconsecration of the original church building and the dedication of a temporary worship shelter. The new sanctuary will serve as a place of worship, fellowship, and ministry for future generations of Lutherans in the National Capital District.

Chairman of the ccongregation Banake Rumbam said the construction would take almost 15 months to complete.
He said the new building would have a seating capacity of 1,000, reflecting the number of worshippers who attend both English and Pidgin services.
Rumbam thanked the congregation for their prayers to build the new church.
Well Builders Limited has been entrusted with the construction. Operations Manager Danniel Duban expressed gratitude for the opportunity, pledging to deliver quality workmanship with integrity and professionalism. “This is a significant place for worship and spiritual growth,” Mr. Duban said. “We will maintain high safety standards and collaborate closely with the church council and community, guided by divine blessing, to complete this project.”
In 15months’ time, the congregation is expected to worship in a morden new sanctuary that reflects both its history and its vision for the future.
