NORTH Fly MP James Donald has strongly condemned drunk driving for causing deaths to innocent lives in the district’s capital, Kiunga, in recent weeks.

This comes after two separate incidents which claimed three lives, including a child’s, just within weeks.

“Three weeks ago, a mother from Kungim village with her child were killed by drunk driver in Kiunga town, and today (this morning), a man from Fuma in Nomad, was killed by another drunk driver,” Mr. Donald said.

He said that the two drunk drivers responsible for deaths are both from the Highlands region.

“The relatives of the deceased from Fuma, and the frustrated relatives of the previous killing of a Yongom mother and child, together with the locals in Kiunga town mobilized and protested in retaliation, however, the police in Kiunga with the help of Defence have managed to contain the situation from escalating,” Mr Donald said.

While condemning the actions of the drunk drivers, Donald also thanked the police and defence personnel for their quick action in containing the situation.

Donald said his district government (through DDA) would put in place stricter control measures to deal with drunk driving, to avoid similar incidents from happening in future, and to safeguard lives of the general public.

Furthermore, the North Fly MP has indicated that those from other parts of PNG who are doing nothing and causing law and order problems in North Fly will be identified through proper process and repatriated back to their provinces of origin.

Meanwhile, the two drunk drivers responsible have been arrested and are now at Kiunga Police cells pending further investigations.
