MINISTER for Administrative Services and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Constitutional Matters Richard Masere has welcomed the appointment of Dr Nicole Haley as Papua New Guinea’s new Electoral Commissioner describing it as a significant step towards strengthening the country’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 National General Election.

He said the appointment reflects the Government’s commitment to reforming the Electoral Commission and restoring public confidence in the country’s democratic processes.

“I support the Prime Minister James Marape’s vision of ensuring that every eligible citizen is guaranteed their democratic right under the principle of ‘One Person, One Vote’,” Minister Masere said.

“This appointment signals the beginning of a new chapter for the PNG Electoral Commission as we prepare for an election that is transparent, credible and trusted by our people.”

The Minister said the bipartisan appointment process demonstrated that electoral integrity rises above politics and should always remain a national priority.

“As the Minister responsible for Electoral Commission, I will work closely with Dr Haley, the Commission’s management,

Government agencies and all stakeholders to ensure the Commission receives the policy support, resources and institutional backing required to deliver a successful election in 2027.”

Minister Masere acknowledged the contribution of Acting Electoral Commissioner Ms. Margaret Vagi for her leadership during the transition period and thanked the dedicated officers of the Electoral Commission who continue to serve under challenging circumstances.

He said key priorities over the coming months would include updating the Electoral Roll, strengthening election administration, enhancing security arrangements, supporting electoral staff and ensuring greater transparency throughout the electoral process.

“The lessons from previous elections must guide us as we build a stronger and more accountable Electoral Commission. Every effort will be made to ensure eligible voters can freely, safely and fairly exercise their constitutional right to elect leaders of their choice.”

Minister Masere called on all Electoral Commission officers, public servants, security agencies, provincial administrations and development partners to unite behind the reform agenda and support the new Commissioner in delivering meaningful improvements.

“The work starts now. We have a shared responsibility to protect the integrity of our democracy and ensure the 2027 National General Election reflects the true will of the people.

Together, we can build an electoral system that all Papua New Guineans can have confidence in,” Minister Masere concluded.
