SPECTATORS attending this weekend’s Digicel ExxonMobil Cup Finals and the Grand Final the following week will see an increased Police and security presence at the Santos National Football Stadium (NFS), following incidents involving a small number of individuals during last weekend’s finals.
In a joint statement released by NFS and the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC), the two organisations said additional Police and security personnel would be deployed at entry points and throughout the venue to help ensure a safe, respectful and enjoyable environment for all spectators.
“Anyone whose behaviour does not meet the standards expected at the stadium will be immediately removed from the venue and, where appropriate, referred to Police for further action,” the statement said.
The statement follows incidents involving a small number of individuals during last weekend’s Digicel ExxonMobil Cup Finals match between the Hagen Eagles and Rabaul Gurias.
NFS and PNGNRLC said they had met following the incidents and reaffirmed their united commitment to maintaining a safe environment for everyone attending rugby league matches.
Both organisations also apologised to rugby league fans for the unacceptable behaviour and condemned the actions of those involved.
“Such behaviour does not represent the overwhelming majority of rugby league supporters in Papua New Guinea,” the statement said.
“Importantly, Boroko Police and other units acted swiftly, identified the suspect and apprehended him on-site. The person was subsequently arrested and charged, with bail refused.”
The organisations said CCTV footage from the stadium had also been provided to Police to assist in formally identifying other individuals who may have been responsible.
Police investigations are continuing, while NFS and PNGNRLC said they would maintain close cooperation with law enforcement authorities.
“We are united in our approach: there is zero tolerance for violence, intimidation, abuse or other inappropriate behaviour at the stadium,” both organisations affirmed.
While expressing disappointment over the incidents, NFS and PNGNRLC also acknowledged the thousands of supporters who behaved responsibly and respectfully throughout the day.
“Many spectators, including mothers, children and families, remained at the stadium following the incidents, enjoyed the entertainment and subsequent matches, and departed peacefully,” the statement said.
The organisations are now encouraging fans to turn their attention to this weekend’s Finals and support their teams in a positive and respectful manner.
“This weekend is about great rugby league,” the statement said.
“Supporters are encouraged to come along, bring their families, wear their team colours, cheer loudly, passionately and respectfully and enjoy what promises to be another entertaining weekend of Digicel ExxonMobil Cup Finals football.”
